Ghyll Scrambling.

The Lake District has some fantastic ghyll's for us to play in. Ghyll scrambling is simply, making your way through a mountain stream in the water, over boulders, slides, jumps, dives and in some cases climbing up the waterfalls.

This activity is for young and old, fit or not so fit and you don’t even need to be able to swim for some of them.
This is the perfect activity on a bad weather day, so why not get wet when it’s wet anyway? If it is a hot day then let’s cool you down!

All kit is provided - wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids (and harnesses if required). You just need swimwear and an old pair of shoes/boots. I have a few available if you need some.

Stoneycroft Ghyll

A favourite with families, groups and couples. After a short 15 minute walk uphill to our ‘get in’ point, we negotiate a series of slides, dives (or belly flops), jumps and rocky pools.

Stoneycroft is in the Northern Lake District so if you are staying up this way it is the perfect half day activity. Suitable from ages 6/7 (if they are super brave) to the grandparents, this thrilling ghyll will excite everyone.

Honister Ghyll

Based at the bottom of Honister Pass on the Borrowdale side we work our way up this ghyll, scrambling up the boulders, through the pools and under trees culminating in a backwards splash into a deep pool before a short walk back to the cars.

This ghyll is usually the place to play after very heavy rain which leaves the other locations inaccessible. Suitable for the very young to the very grown up, and a great beginner ghyll if you are nervous about this activity.

The Esk Gorge

This is the mumma of them all. Huge, wild and remote in the Esk valley this is a serious adrenaline rush for those who feel the above locations are not quite fitting the bill. We have around an hour to walk in carrying all our kit so a little bit of fitness is required here to get the most from this day. This is a full day with 20ft jumps, crystal clear deep pools and waterfalls to climb. Not for the faint hearted the Esk delivers on adventure, adrenaline and excitement. You can bypass jumps and make the experience to suit you. Suitable for older teens upwards.
